Knights Drop Game to Eagles Landing Christian Academy

The Chargers bested the Knights on Tuesday evening in a fierce pitching duel between ELCA’s lefty, Cole Ganopulos, and Pace ace, Jared Datoc, who both pitched complete games.

Datoc faced 28 batters in seven innings and threw 93 total pitches, of which an astounding 82% were strikes. He allowed four hits and struck out eight. Both Datoc and Ganopulos each allowed only two earned runs, but the Chargers claimed the lead on an unearned run plated as a result of two defensive miscues and a slider gone-awry.

The Knights had three hits on the evening, a single by Will Rucker and two hits by Kam Uter including an RBI double. Dylan Steinfeld scored Kam on a 6-3 groundout. The Knights learned a hard lesson: mistakes are magnified in tightly contested battles. Datoc registered his first loss of the season on one of his best outings of the year… that’s baseball.

The Knights travel to McDonough this evening for a rematch with the Chargers. Kam Uter has the start. First pitch is at 5:55 PM. They hit the road again on Saturday for a non-region game against North Cobb Christian. GO KNIGHTS!

KnightLights Preview

The Knights extended their consecutive win streak to 14 last week with a two-game sweep over the 5A Mount Vernon Mustangs and a 9-6 victory over non-region rival, Fellowship Christian.

The Knights’ offense struggled with Mt. Vernon’s lefty slow-ball pitcher in game one at home on Tuesday night. Jared Datoc pitched seven frames of shut-out ball, striking out 13 and allowing no runs on a lone hit that came with one out in the seventh. With the score still tied at zero, Matt Plisko offered relief in extra innings, retiring the side in both the eighth and ninth. Noah Brooker led off the bottom of nine for the Knights with a full-count walk, advanced to second on a sac bunt by Plisko and scored on Sam Rubenstein’s single up the middle. Matt Plisko was credited with the win.

The Knights’ bats came to life on Wednesday evening when they played host to Fellowship Christian Academy. The offense collected nine hits and outscored their opponents 9 to 6. Kameron Uter got credit for the win via a solid mound performance, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out 11 Paladins in five innings of work. Wilson Alexander and Matt Plisko combined for the save.

Andy Bainton pitched a complete five-inning shut-out on Friday evening as the Knights pounded Mount Vernon in a game shortened by the ten-run mercy rule. Raphy Ramirez set the offensive tone, going three for four with a stand up triple to lead off the game and scoring twice. Jared Datoc went two for two with a walk, 3 RBI and scored twice. Sam Rubenstein went two for three with an RBI and scored twice. Marc Bernstein had two hits and scored a run and Kam Uter had a three-RBI double on the night. Final score: Knights 10 – Mustangs 0.

The Knights take on the Paideia Pythons on the road on Wednesday, 4/16 and at home on Thursday, 4/17. First pitch on Thursday evening is at 5:30PM, but we invite you to arrive at 5:00 to celebrate Senior Night. The Knights are 14-1 on the season and 10-0 in region play.

Outside the Chalk Lines

The Diamond Knights are enjoying as much success off the field as they are on it this season. Marc Bernstein, Sam Rubenstein and manager, Morgan Brewton-Johnson were admitted, during the early decision period, to Vanderbilt, University of Pennsylvania and Princeton, respectively. Chris St. Paul will attend SMU and Jared Datoc (Georgia Tech), Raphi Ramirez (NC State) and Kam Uter (Wake Forest) will transition from teammates to ACC rivals, which means Will Rucker (University of Virginia) is prohibited from cheering for Cavalier baseball when the Yellow Jackets, Wolfpack or Deamon Deacons are in Charlottesville. Wilson Alexander and manager, Jules Zappone have not made their final college decisions yet, but rumor has it they are leaning toward another four years in the Peach State.

Congratulations to sophomore, Sean Murtaugh, on his recently-awarded 2014 Orkin Scholarship and to Sam Rubenstein and Will Rucker on their induction into Pace Academy’s Cum Laude Society, which represents the top ten percent of the senior class.

Will Rucekr and Sam Rubenstein - proof that genius does not always translate into street smarts.

Knights Add 10-4 Victory Over Our Lady of Mercy High School to Season Record

The Knights added a 10-4 victory to their record last night when they played host to the Bobcats of Our Lady of Mercy High School. Raphael Ramirez hit the Knights’ first home run of the season, a shot straight up the middle and over the fence in dead center. Dylan Steinfeld and Alex Rafeedie were perfect from the plate going 4 for 4 with two doubles and two singles and 3 for 3 respectively. Will Rucker and Wilson Alexander hit stand-up triples and Marc Bernstein and Kam Uter also had a hit apiece on the day.

Starting pitcher, Cooper Drose, allowed two runs on 3 hits and collected 4 Ks in his three innings of work. Wilson Alexander provided two innings of relief and helped himself to a 1-3 groundout on a swinging bunt to get out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth. Closer, Matt Plisko allowed three hits, no runs and racked up four strikeouts in the last two innings of the game.

Screen Shot 2014-04-02 at 12.10.13 PMWeather permitting, the Knights will road trip to Fayetteville for a rematch with the OLM Bobcats on Friday, April 4. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
